As much as we all love the Australian summer with its beach days, BBQs, and long holidays, there is something undeniably special about the change that arrives in March. The humidity eases, the air feels fresher, and the light softens into a warm, golden glow that is far more flattering. As a wedding and portrait photographer on the Central Coast, I believe Autumn is the true Goldilocks season for photography and the perfect time to plan an Autumn engagement photoshoot or couples’ session.
If you’ve browsed my portfolio, you’ll know I’m obsessed with light. It’s the single most important ingredient in creating romantic, natural images.
In the height of summer, the sun sits high in the sky for most of the day, often creating harsh shadows under the eyes and strong highlights on the skin. In Autumn, the sun sits lower for more of the day, producing softer, more flattering light that wraps gently around you and enhances natural skin tones.
There’s also a practical bonus. During December and January, sunset can be as late as 8:30 pm, meaning golden hour shoots often run quite late. In Autumn, sunset typically falls between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm, allowing us to capture that dreamy light in the late afternoon while still leaving you time for a relaxed dinner date afterwards.
Let’s be honest, romance is harder to enjoy in 30-degree heat. Engagement photoshoots are all about connection, from holding hands to cuddling close, laughing together, and moving naturally. In the middle of a humid February, especially on the Central Coast, this can quickly start to feel uncomfortable rather than romantic.
That’s why I highly recommend an Autumn engagement photoshoot, when average daytime temperatures often sit between 20°C and the mid-20s, making it easy to relax and stay present. You can enjoy the experience without worrying about melting makeup or frizzy hair. Cooler weather naturally encourages closeness, and that comfort translates into photos that feel effortless, genuine, and unforced.
While our native eucalyptus trees stay beautifully green year-round, Autumn brings stunning seasonal colour to select locations, particularly in the Hunter Valley. During April and May, vineyard leaves shift from bright green to rich tones of gold, rust, and burnt orange. These colours create a warm, romantic backdrop that adds depth and visual interest to your images.
Autumn is also the perfect season to elevate your wardrobe. Layered outfits photograph beautifully, with textured knits, denim jackets, ankle boots, and soft, neutral tones adding depth and timeless style. These details add a timeless, cozy aesthetic that simply isn’t possible with summer sundresses and shorts.
Autumn may only last a few short months, but the images created during this season are timeless. Whether you are drawn to the golden vineyards of the Hunter Valley or the soft pastel sunsets along Central Coast beaches, it is the perfect time to plan your engagement photoshoot.
